Ell, Oh Ell

One cool thing about English is how it evolves over time: new words sprout, while the meaning of an old word changes through usage. Now, here’s food for thought: is this effect happening faster? I’m sure I’m not the only person who’s noticed that LOL, as used in emails, status updates and the like, no longer means laugh out loud or anything else related to laughter. Nowadays, it just means, “I’ve finished writing,” as in:

ok, meet u later lol

Will there be any mourning of the demise of the period lol?
